Night Charging Station

by Monica on February 21, 2013

in Tip of the Day,Website Wednesday

Charging Station Drawer www.chaostoorder.comDo you have a designated spot to charge your electronics at night? Many of us use our phones as an alarm clock, so chances are it’s on or  close to your  bed.  I created a night time charging station in my nightstand because my kids turn in their phones and iPods before they go to sleep. I recently purchased new bedroom furniture and was happy to see that the night stands have an electrical cord attached to the back. I plugged a power strip into the back and brought it through into the drawer, you can also to this with an extension cord from a nearby outlet. This way we were able to put all the phones in one place without messy cords lying around. I also purchased a piece of foam board and some soft velvet fabric. I cut the foam board to the size of the drawer and stapled the fabric to it. This not only makes the drawer look nice, it’s not so noisy when you’re plugging in against the wood drawer.

Organization is about having a place for everything. Our phones and electronics are with us all day long, but when we sleep, they should have a tidy place to retire to as well. How do you store your electronics?

key-ring-app-160x160Is your wallet overstuffed with plastic cards? The ever growing amount of stores using loyalty cards has added plenty of clutter to our wallets. Since they do save money on purchases, they are good to keep on hand, but the hassle of carrying them around can make it not seem worthwhile. KeyRing is a great solution to lighten the card clutter load. It’s an app that works with iPhone, Blackberry, Android and Windows Phones. Simply install the app and scan the barcodes of your loyalty cards. You can even sign up for more loyalty cards within the app easily  without having to fill out any in-store paperwork. This is a great way to eliminate having to carry around all the cards, not to mention never having or finding the right card when you need it! Check out www.KeyRingApp.com and organize your wallet today!

Subscribers-remember that you must go to the blog to view video.

Are you an iPhone 4 user who has gone on major detours with the Apple maps  in iOS? I rely on my iPhone to work hard and not fail, but when it does, it can be very frustrating! I have found myself lost many times using Apple maps and have anxiously been awaiting Google’s new Map App. If you too have felt the frustration, download the new Google Maps App now and stop wasting time driving in circles!

I came across this terrific app looking to improve on the Gift List app I’ve used in the past. Gift Plan works not only for Christmas presents, but it keeps track of all gift giving and special reminders throughout the year. You can import contacts with birthdays (add the birthdays to import), and keep track of gift ideas, collections, likes and dislikes (in case they tell you they never want another fruit cake), budget, purchases, etc… There’s even a place to add sizes, how handy is that!  It’s great to have the notes you need for gift giving in one tidy little app. No more paper lists that clutter up your space or have other eyeballs viewing. This app can even password protect your lists. It’s nice to have an organized place to store all the information that clutters up the brain this time of the year. What do I need to buy? Who gets what? How much spent? What size is he?  Have I remembered everyone?  The scattered thoughts  can be transferred into the app so when you’re out shopping you have the ideas, the sizes and all the details you need about that gift. You can use the Gift Plan all year long for other occasions, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. You can also keep it handy to continually add to your Christmas list for next year so all your gift ideas will be organized. Check out Gift Plan and bring the chaos of gift giving and shopping to order.

Having to sit in an office to get work done has become a thing of the past. Over half of today’s corporate work gets done outside the office. We went from having to work in an office to the convenience of work-at-home. Now technology has allowed us to break free from the desk and work wherever we go. In order to do that  organization is essential. It’s one thing in an office to have papers piled around to find what you need, but when your working mobile, you must streamline and digitize what you need for instant access. Storing files over the cloud on Google Docs or iCloud is a great way to store your documents. Of course there’s an app  or system built in for just about everything else. Here are a few that I find indispensable:

  • Mobile Banking. Your bank’s mobile app allows you the convenience of not only paying bills anywhere, but you can also make deposits, transfer funds, check balances and even receive text messages when bills are coming due or your balance is running low.
  • Contacts.  Think of your contacts folder not only as the people you call frequently, but a personal database for everything you need. You can keep all kinds of  important information stored (cryptically if necessary) in the “notes” section of each contact.
  • iPhone Reminders. If you have an iPhone 4S hold down your home button and ask Siri to remind you of anything, even when you arrive at a specific location. It’s cool how they’ve used the GPS to help keep us organized this way!
  • Things. A great GTD app which I sync on several devices with my “to-do” list. Not just for today, but I hold many different lists there on Things. Read my post about Things.

What are you getting done on the go? Share apps or systems you use to help keep organized.

Being organized means staying on top of all of the nagging home maintenance projects that are required as a homeowner. There once was a day when we would remember those mundane tasks like when the air filters had to be replaced or when the dryer vents needed to be cleaned. The business of life can get in the way of making sure these projects get done and often it’s not until something breaks that we realize simple maintenance would have been a much better option than the calamity of the mechanical breakdown. Brighnest is an app that can help you keep track of the never ending home maintenance jobs. You can add all the members of your household and assign tasks to them (sometimes an electronic nudge works better than a verbal nag). There’s even an area where you can store important items like paint colors, user manuals, customized tips and ideas etc… The setup of the app is interesting because it gathers all of the information it needs on your home and then, knowing that, it sets you up with a typical maintenance schedule. Of course you can also add your own tasks (I added repeating kids chores to my list).  Check out Brightnest.com and keep your home humming!

Web Wednesday: Gas Buddy App

by Monica on September 12, 2012

in Website Wednesday

As gas prices continue to climb, there’s an app that can help alleviate some of the frustration. Gas Buddy is a community supported app that allows users to update gas prices for everyone to benefit. When you install the app it uses your current location and  searches to find the stations with the best gas prices around. It can really come in handy especially when you’re in the city and there’s a gas station on every corner. Driving down a few blocks to save money on gas can be worth it. You can also search gas prices to any destination in the United States.

Another feature on Gasbuddy.com is the Trip Cost Calculator. You can input the start and end points for a trip, along with the make and model of the car, and it will calculate what the fuel costs will be for the trip! Check out Gasbuddy.com and upload the app on your smartphone to become an educated fuel consumer!

Website Wednesday: iHomework App

by Monica on August 22, 2012

in Website Wednesday

When school starts students are more motivated than ever to have a successful year. Technology has become immensely helpful in it’s ability to give students access to information as well as to help keep them organized–if they so choose! Today’s back to school Website Wednesday Choice is iHomework. It’s a terrific little App that keeps track of all homework assignments by class, by date and by grade. You can view all assignments–even the ones you wouldn’t keep in a daily planner that are due weeks in the future. It’s a great way to stay organized and on top of all your assigments. You can also choose to input grades as they come in and know exactly where you stand in each and every class. The app works perfectly fine with the new OS X Mountain Lion and it also syncs over the cloud. It can be used on any mac device. You can sync the computer at home along with an iPod or iPhone. Check out iHomework at the App Store!

Here’s an interesting App if you’re searching for a house, and intriguing even if you’re not. Good Housekeeping compared it to Shazam for houses. With Home Snap, you take a photo of a house you’re interested in and the App gives you all the information that is available on the house according to public record. Estimated value, number of bedrooms and baths, square footage, property taxes, sales information, etc…Great to make you’re search as organized as possible! It works via GPS. Even though it asks you to snap a photo of the house, it often needs to clarify exactly which address you are inquiring about. It may not work as well with houses in very close proximity, but when I put it to the test, it did just fine. Check it out if you’re in the housing market, or even just to satisfy your curiosity–it’s pretty cool!

Whether your heading off on vacation, going on a business trip or sending kids off to college, here is an app that makes the dreaded job of packing a bit easier. As much as I love to organize, packing is always something I procrastinate. Having to plan all that’s needed on a trip for any weather or circumstance is difficult enough, then trying to minimize into the smallest bag possible is another conundrum. Remember when we could throw everything but the kitchen sink into a suitcase and drag it all along? Those days are long over, and it’s probably a good thing, afterall, how much do we REALLY need?

What’s great about the UPacking List from NIX Solutions is that as you think of items that you will need to bring, you can add them at any time from your phone or iPad. You can save lists for future travel and create many different categories with colorful icons attached. There are also about 300 items on the list to help trigger your brain to remember everything that might come along. The app is for iPhone, iPad and Android and I have found it very helpful for all sorts of packing needs. Some even use this app for packing up prior to an entire move. Another great use is if you frequently travel to a lake house or vacation spot, you can save your list of items you regularly pack and default to this list and refine it each time you return. Check out the UPacking List and make your next packing job a whole lot easier!

Sparrow

Sparrow may be the best app released for the iPhone this year. While Apple’s built-in mail client is completely serviceable, Sparrow demonstrates what it could. It’s almost indispensable for Gmail users, but Sparrow works with pretty much any other type of account, too. It’s fast, easy to navigate, simple to move mail around, and just generally a pleasure to use. It comes with one caveat, however: it doesn’t support push notifications. This won’t be a bother if you don’t enjoy finding out the very second an email arrives. If you do, you can always jailbreak and install Sparrow+. That’ll get you push notifications and all you to set it as the default client.

Cue

Cue is a handy app that provides you with a rundown of your day without any input on your part. It scans your email accounts, calendars, and several other web services to get an idea of what’s going on in your life. It then repackages all that data into a more digestible, concise format that you can load up on your iPhone anytime. You can check the weather, see appointments (with contact information for people involved), let you know about birthdays, and more. It’s not an app that necessarily helps you do anything, or involves doing much, but it’s an app that’ll keep you on task and avoid forgetting the things that are important.

Orchestra

Orchestra is a wonderful, simple, to-do management app that you can use by yourself or with virtually anyone else with an email account. When you need to collaborate, you can just add people you know to a task whether they have Orchestra or not. Additionally, you can add tasks with voice recognition if you don’t feel like typing. You can send them in via email, too. Orchestra has lots of great features but it’s also very simple to understand and use. That’s a tough thing to pull off, but Orchestra does it admirably.

Skype isn’t perfect, but it’s still one of the best ways to make VOIP calls and video chat on a mobile phone, regardless of whether you’re on Wi-Fi or cellular data. Even the pretty video quality is pretty good in either case. While there are plenty of calling alternatives, Skype is the most solid and versatile option.

If you’re a member of Google Voice, the official app will let you tap into your account to check your voicemail and text messages. Additionally, you can send messages and make calls from your Google Voice number. Because the iPhone is pretty much locked down, you can’t use Google Voice as your default dialer. That said, jailbrokeniPhones can add the SMS GV Extension and the Phone GV Extension for full integration.

Instant messaging on your phone can get a little bit overwhelming, as a touchscreen phone isn’t made for rapid text-based communication with many people. It has a really simple interface that’s easy to navigate, support for practically every IM service you could want, keeps a searchable chat history, and a lot more.

Waze

Waze is our favorite turn-by-turn navigation app for iPhone, and for good reason. Even though we’re excited to use the new Maps in iOS 6, which will offer up some serious competition, Waze is already ahead of the game in several areas. Because of its large community, you can find out about were police cars are stationed and be warned about accidents and closures. That’s already on top of general traffic reporting. Additionally, the latest version of Waze will help you find a cheap gas station wherever you are and even get you a discount in some cases. Those are just a few of its awesome features, and they’re all completely free.

It integrates with your music library and lets you share your activities. If you’re using Dropbox for all sorts of clever things, it’s always nice having access to your sync’d files from your phone. Air Sharing makes it pretty simple, offering a variety of ways to get movies, PDFs, music, and other documents from your computer to your iPhone. StreamToMe and Air Video

StreamToMe and Air Video are both apps that help you stream video from your computer to your iPhone, no matter where you are. They’re especially compelling when you want to watch something at, say, the gym and you didn’t have time to transcode and sync it to your device first. Whether you’re connected to Wi-Fi or 3G, you can stream video directly to your phone from anywhere you are (the quality of your connection permitting, of course). Both apps have some subtle differences, such as StreamToMe’s ability to stream more than just video and Air Video’s option to pre-encode content for easier streaming, and either are worth the price of admission: $2.99.

Plex

Although Air Video and StreamToMe offer remote media streaming just like Plex, neither are as easy to set up. With Plex you just set your media folders, create an account, and log in with that account on any device. From there you can stream without any network configuration, plus you get the great home theater experience Plex provides for televisions. While you may prefer just streaming files and not worrying about a fancy interface, if you like what Plex has to offer it’s a must-download. One of my favorite bonuses that the app provides is the ability to watch something at home and then pick up right where you left off on your mobile.

GoodPlayer

If you’d like to keep your videos in their native format rather than use Air Video or StreamToMe to stream iOS-friendly versions, GoodPlayer can handle the task—if your hardware’s up to it. While GoodPlayer supports pretty much every video format you could need to play, it’s limited by your iPhone’s hardware. It tends to do better using the iPad’s A5 chip, claiming playback of even 720p MKV files. It’s a very capable player, but it’ll be significantly more useful once the hardware catches up.

One great way to help you get rid of that clutter that lingers is to plan a yard sale. Sometimes it’s hard to donate items when you don’t know where they’re going and if they will really be used. It’s easier to get rid of  things when you know your items are going into the hands of someone who wants them. Sometimes a yard sale can be more work than it’s worth, so you need to be organized and efficient in the process. Here are some tips to help keep it simple and successful:

  • When clearing out the clutter, have an extra bin for yard sale items. Keep dot stickers and a black permanent marker handy to price things right away as you’re clearing through a cluttered place. When you’re motivated about a sale, you’re more likely to sell what you can.
  • Don’t go it alone. A sale is a big undertaking, make sure you have someone to help out, there needs to be at least one person on duty at all times. The best option is to have a multi-family sale. Combine your efforts with a friend or neighbor, you’ll have more items to attract customers and more people available to staff the sale.
  • Price to sell. Yard sale items are typically priced lower than at a thrift store. If something is labeled for $8.00 at a thrift store, tag it for $5.00 at a yard sale.
  • Price by bin. Rather than tagging every item, label bins with a price and toss items into that bin.
  • Get the word out. Post signs, place an ad in the local paper and go online. There’s even an app for that: Garagesalestracker.com
  • The most important part of having a yard sale is making sure that the items ALL go.  When your planning, call and arrange for the pickup as soon as possible after the sale ends. Itemize what remains and you can even take a tax deduction so you’ll still come out ahead!

Having a yard sale is an undertaking, but if you plan it properly, its a great way to streamline, get rid of excess clutter and feel more organized.

If you want to be optimally efficient at the computer, you need to know what you’re doing. Summer is the time to plan an adventure, and going on a family road trip can be one of the highlights. Here are some Apps that I have found useful in helping plan a road trip.

Roadtrippers: Integrated with Google Maps, it tells you all of the points of interest along your route. Haven’t you ever passed through a town and wondered what you might be missing? How to Use Your Smartphone for a Neater OfficeYour smartphone can be a helpful gadget in the ongoing battle to get and stay organized. If you have a phone with a camera, take some snapshots as a quick way to help keep you organized when you’re on the go. Here’s a list of some handy photos to snap:

• Printer cartridge refills. Take a quick photo of the printer cartridge box so you always have the serials, numbers and whatever other information with you.

• Office space. If you’re in need of an extra desk or filing cabinet, keep pictures of the space handy so when you’re out and see something you like, you will know if it will work. You can also store your dimensions in my measurements.

• Parking space. If you run out on an appointment, snap a photo of your parking space so you’ll remember where to return to.

• Banking. You can also avoid running out to the bank and make deposits by taking photos of checks with an app like Chase Mobile.

Once you’ve taken the photos, you don’t want to just have them linger uncategorized in your photo stream. It will be more efficient to keep any informational photos of this type in a separate album or upload to the cloud with an app like Evernote.
